After the clarification of vision, mission and values, the organisational structures and the environment come into the focus. An S.W.O.T. analysis in this context bases on the formulation of status descriptions, not on actions. They refer to the categories culture, structure, processes and staff of an institution. For each of them follows the identification of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. The example, we follow within the training course, leads you to four different types of strategies with four different directions: expansion, marketing, participation and reduction. However, it does not deliver an approach of how important single factors are – this is something your school leaders have to decide together with you.

Use the presentation SDD2_Analysis I. Let the learners draw a tabular like shown in the example below. Write the results from the analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges in the foreseen fields. Try to find strategies that emerge from bringing two aspects together. The left column refers to strengths and weaknesses of the school. The line above considers the environment. The combination of two fields leads to strategies that help the school to re-define its position. Help them through discussions and asking to sort their strategies into the scheme. They may include as much strategic options as possible – later they decide, which lines they want to follow.

Many learners want to document everything immediately on their notebooks. This is very welcome in the sense of increasing digitisation. However, from didactic reasons, let them document everything afterwards. Firstly, they should communicate to develop ideas about digitisation strategy areas.

Elaboration of S.W.O.T. analysis90 minutes

Explore the situation at your school before you start with the S.W.O.T. analysis. Talk to students, teachers, headmasters, administrative and technical staff. Note the results.

Create a S.W.O.T. analysis following the given example.

Present your strategies to colleagues and especially to your headmaster. Discuss and decide, which strategic options would be profitable for your school in terms of becoming more digitalised.
